North Elementary School Security Officer Mr. Torell Flowers Celebrated with Community Builder Award from Prince George Masonic Lodge #115

October 15, 2025

Hundreds of North Elementary School students and staff members filled the school's cafetorium on Wednesday morning to deliver a meaningful surprise sendoff to one of their cardinals, Mr. Torell Flowers, their school security officer, as he prepares to transition into a new role with Prince George County Parks and Recreation.

During the morning-side ceremony, Mr. Flowers was surprised by the cheers of hundreds of students he had made a lasting impression on during his time as North's SSO, a role he had served at the school since November of 2022. Also in attendance for the celebration were Prince George Masonic Lodge #115 representative Mr. Don Rackley and State Delegate for Virginia's 82nd District Mrs. Kim Taylor. Mr. Flowers was recognized by the local masonic lodge, which honored the former school staff member with a Community Builder Award.

The award is commonly awarded by masonic lodges like Prince George County's Lodge #115 to celebrate the work of non-masons who have made outstanding contributions to their community, embodying the standards and ideals of the Masons.

Throughout his time at North Elementary, Mr. Flowers was seen as a positive presence in the school community and more than just a security officer. He was often one of the first to welcome students and families with a smile when they arrived at school or activities. Alongside supporting safety throughout the building, Mr. Flowers was always willing to offer a hand to any teachers and staff who needed assistance. His commitment to North Elementary, shown by his time spent with students during lunch and his integral role in the school's community, earned him the distinguished recognition of being named North Elementary's Support Employee of the Year for the 2024-25 School Year.

"Mr. Flowers has not only made an impact within the community as far as local parks and recreation is concerned, but also right here in the school system," Ms. Callie Nunnally, North Elementary School's assistant principal, said. "He has a relationship with every student in this building. They come to him and seek him out, so he certainly deserves to be recognized for the impact he's made on our students and staff. The fact that we get to honor him in this way and allow his exit to be at this magnitude, including a state-level recognition, is phenomenal."

Paired with his building duties, Mr. Flowers also played a key role in the students' school lives by engaging with them through activities and active dialogue while at school. At the end of the assembly, some students bought Mr. Flowers' handmade notes and cards, giving him well wishes as he heads to Prince George County Parks and Recreation, located a short distance from the North Elementary campus on Old Stage Road.

Before leaving, Mr. Flowers also received a custom gift from the North community - An artistic cardinal designed by North Elementary's Ms. Andrea Rankin, comprising over 700 fingerprints, one for each student at the school - inscribed with a message that read, "Each fingerprint represents a life you've touched and a memory you've helped create. Like the feathers of our cardinal, you've made our school brighter, stronger, and full of heart. Your impact will always soar with us."

Mr. Flowers receives a cardinal made of fingerprints of students, a representation of this impact on students.

Mr. Flowers will continue to support North as a volunteer with the school's monthly "Boys of Brilliance" club, continuing his service as a role model for students at the school.

"We love you, Mr. Flowers. We are so proud of you and thankful for all you do. You've been placed on this Earth to continue to make an impact for communities that need amazing people like you," Ms. Nunnally closed.
