N.B. Clements Junior High School's Junior BETA Club students showcased their leadership and collaboration skills during their recent trip to the organization's Leadership Summit in late October during this year’s events at Great Wolf Lodge.
Taking place on October 28-29 in Williamsburg, nearly three dozen members of the school’s Junior Beta Club took part in a variety of workshops, competitions, and keynote sessions designed to strengthen leadership, teamwork, and ethical decision-making. Thanks to their efforts, the club's members qualified for nationals in every category they competed in, a testament to their commitment to excellence and the mentorship of their teachers and advisors.
Leadership Focus and Objectives
The summit provided a powerful platform for students to grow as emerging leaders. Guided by the Objectives of Student Leadership, participants learned to:
- Identify their personal leadership styles and strengths.
- Define and act upon core ethical and personal values with integrity.
- Build relationships that honor the dignity and contributions of others.
- Strengthen teamwork and collaboration to accomplish shared goals.
- Connect with like-minded peers who share the ideals of National Beta.
- Increase confidence and capacity to achieve collective success.
"Beta is more than competition—it’s about building character, confidence, and community," said Dr. Steven Bhatt, Director of School Counseling and Junior Beta Advisor. "Our students represented Clements with leadership, pride, and professionalism."
"Watching our students collaborate, support one another, and present with such confidence was inspiring," said Mrs. Megan Wilder, teacher, parent and chaperone. "They truly embodied the spirit of Beta and represented N.B. Clements with excellence."
In-Focus: Leadership Summit Highlights
Students competed in four key events that emphasized teamwork, ethics, and creativity:
- All the World is a Stage: Teams reimagined classic children’s stories and nursery rhymes while incorporating Beta’s pillars of character, leadership, service, and achievement.
- Being Better Betas: Ethical Decision Making: Using Clemson University’s STAR Model (Stop, Test, Act, Reflect), students analyzed complex ethical dilemmas and presented creative solutions.
- Beta Blitz: Participants showcased artistic and marketing talents through convention-themed merchandise designs.
- Collaboration Connection: Fast-paced challenges tested students’ problem-solving, adaptability, and leadership under pressure.
Inspiring the Next Generation of Leaders
Leadership Summits also feature sessions led by National Beta’s premier keynote speakers, who inspire attendees to lead with empathy, integrity, and courage. Students learned to embrace the Beta Leadership Principles:
- Growth: Developing mind, body, and spirit.
- Values: Doing what is right.
- Character: Building a legacy of integrity.
- Connection: Strengthening collaboration and teamwork.
The N.B. Clements Junior Beta Club returned home with strengthened leadership skills, new friendships, and a deeper dedication to the ideals of National Beta. Their enthusiasm and character throughout the event have set the stage for continued success at upcoming state and national competitions.
"A special thank you goes out to Ms. Keeler and Mrs. Wilder for going above and beyond—staying up late into the night when the kids asked for extra rehearsal time and waking up early each morning to help prepare for the day’s events. Their dedication and care made all the difference," Dr. Bhatt said. "We also want to thank the many parents who volunteered, including those who served as judges, chaperones, and behind-the-scenes helpers. Your time, support, and encouragement helped make this success possible."
