ALERT [CODE 5]: PGCPS Schools & Offices Closed Monday, January 26, 2026 Due to Winter Weather - Important Information for Parents & Staff

January 23, 2026

Good afternoon, Prince George Families,

Just like you, we’ve been monitoring weather forecasts regarding this weekend’s winter storm and the potential impacts on our area. As of writing, the National Weather Service office in Wakefield is projecting significant impacts in our area.

As such, due to these forecasts, Prince George County Public Schools will be CLOSED Monday, January 26, 2026. Employees, use CODE 5 (No Personnel Report to Work).

As I shared with you last month, ahead of our first bout of winter weather, safety is always our first priority, and any decision to delay or close school is made to protect our entire community, including students, staff, and families, when hazardous weather is forecast for our area. We will always act in the interest of safety.

As we look toward next week, we will follow our procedures to determine our opening status, including post-storm road evaluations, building preparations, and communication with our local public safety partners.

I encourage you to enjoy the snow safely, ensuring you and your family are suitably bundled up for the conditions. If you are clearing snow for yourself or others, please stay safe and mindful of overexertion by taking regular breaks and asking a friend, family member, or neighbor for help.

Finally, many of your children came home with their Chromebooks and power supplies to charge their units. They have been brought home in case of a Remote Learning Day. While not a substitute for in-person learning, remote (at-home) learning will allow students to remain engaged with instruction while away from school due to a closure.

How a Remote Learning Day Works

  • Grades Pre-K-3: Students in these grades will receive paper packets prior to leaving school before an expected remote learning day. The students are expected to complete their packet and return it to their teacher upon completion once school reopens.
    • Teachers will hold office hours from 11:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. during the remote learning day where they will be accessible via email to answer questions and provide support for students.

  • Grades 4-12: Students in these grades will complete the work they downloaded to their Chromebook while at school prior to the remote learning day during this time. Students will have to submit their completed remote learning day assignments within seven (7) school days to their teacher(s).
    • Teachers will be available virtually via Google Classroom to answer questions and provide support for students during the remote learning day from 10:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.

In addition, learning specialists, elementary (Pre-K-5) resource teachers, related service providers, and school counselors will hold office hours from 11:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. during the remote learning day where they will be accessible via email to answer questions and provide support for students.

Teachers will allow up to seven (7) days for students to turn in work assigned during the remote learning day(s).

We appreciate your patience and understanding as we make every effort to ensure students are able to continue learning and thriving academically, even during unplanned school closures. We will continue to monitor forecasts and share updates should we need to adjust our opening status during the week ahead.

Have a good and, most importantly, safe weekend ahead, and please be safe.

Sincerely,

Dr. Wayne Lyle
Superintendent
